The Brisbane Sparky Who Opens the Board Before Quoting

No two old boards are alike. A 1960s enclosure full of rewirable fuse wire is a completely different job to a 1990s board that only needs two RCBOs and an extra way. So we take the cover off, photograph what is in there, and quote the work you actually need. If the mains cable or the meter position has to change, we lodge the paperwork with Energex and manage the outage window for you.

What Brisbane Customers Say

Peter N.

Ashgrove

Fuse wire board on a post-war Queenslander. They picked the asbestos backing before cutting anything, dealt with it properly, and had us back on power by mid afternoon.

Janelle W.

Camp Hill

Breakers kept dropping out whenever the ducted system ran. The board had no spare ways left at all. New enclosure, protection on everything, and it is labelled beautifully.

Dev A.

Toowong

Needed the meter shifted before we could add solar. They handled the Energex side and the board on the same visit, which nobody else even offered to do.

Marion T.

Coorparoo

Two others quoted a full replacement. This lot said a couple of RCBOs would fix the real problem and charged for that instead. Rare to get that sort of honesty.

About Us

Old Boards Are Still Everywhere in Brisbane

Ceramic Fuses, No RCDs, and a Load They Were Never Built For

A board wired in 1968 was sized for a fridge, a kettle and a couple of light circuits. Add a ducted system, an induction cooktop and a home office, and that fuse wire is carrying work it was never rated to carry. It is why the lights dim the second a compressor starts.

The same three warning signs turn up again and again across Brisbane. Lights that flicker when a big appliance cycles. A low buzz or hum coming from the enclosure. Breakers that hold all winter, then let go on the first 35 degree afternoon. Any one of them earns an inspection.

Why Choose Us

Why Brisbane Homeowners Book Us for Switchboard Work

Asbestos Panels Handled Properly

Plenty of pre-1990 Brisbane boards sit on an asbestos cement backing panel. We identify it before anything is cut, follow the Queensland handling rules, and never drill or sand a panel to save half an hour.

Energex Coordination Included

Mains upgrades, meter relocations and supply disconnections all need the network involved. We book the outage, meet the crew on site, and get your power back on the same day rather than the following week.

Protection on Every Active Circuit

A residual current device disconnects in roughly 30 milliseconds. We fit protection across power, lighting, oven and air conditioning circuits, not only the ones older rules bothered with.

Certificate of Electrical Safety

The finished board is tested and certified, with the paperwork lodged as the Queensland Electrical Safety Office requires. Useful the day an insurer, a buyer or a property manager asks for evidence.

Room Left for What Comes Next

Ducted air conditioning, a home EV charger and a solar inverter each want their own way on the board. We size it for the house you will have in five years, not just today.

Straight Answers on Scope

Sometimes a full replacement is overkill and a couple of RCBOs solves the actual problem. We will say so, and the quote drops accordingly.

New switchboard with RCD safety switches and clearly labelled circuit breakers

From Fuse Wire to a Fully Protected Board

Single phase, three phase, meter relocations and mains upgrades.

The old fuse carriers come out and a weatherproof enclosure goes in, fitted with a main switch, miniature circuit breakers matched to each cable, and RCD protection across every active circuit. If the house is asking for more supply than a single phase can give, we work out whether three phase is genuinely warranted or whether rebalancing the load does the same job for a fraction of the money. Meter relocations and mains replacements are arranged directly with Energex, so the network side and the property side land on one day instead of three weeks apart.

Most upgrades take four to six hours with the power off.

You get a start time, not a window that swallows the whole day. The supply comes down once, the changeover happens in a single hit, and a standard single phase board is usually live again before school pickup. Bigger boards, three phase work and anything involving a meter relocation take longer, and we tell you that at quote stage rather than on the morning. Keep the fridge and freezer shut and everything in them keeps.

A Board Gets Judged by the Next Sparky Who Opens It

Straight cable runs, honest labels, room left to work.

Anyone can bolt breakers onto a rail. A board that is still quick to fault find in fifteen years takes more care than that. Conductors are cut to length and dressed properly, every way is labelled with what it genuinely feeds instead of a hopeful guess, and the neutral and earth bars are left with space to add to. That extra half hour on the day saves you a diagnostic callout later.

Inspect. Replace. Certify.

Three visits worth of work, finished in one.

You are not chasing an electrician for a quote, then a start date, then a certificate. The inspection tells you what the board needs, the changeover happens on the agreed day, and the compliance paperwork is with you before the van pulls out.

Electrician inspecting an old ceramic fuse board in a Brisbane home

STEP 1 - INSPECT

Cover off, everything checked.

We identify the fuse type, look for an asbestos backing panel, measure the mains and count the spare ways. You get photos and a plain explanation of what is a genuine safety problem and what is simply old.

New weatherproof switchboard enclosure being fitted with circuit breakers

STEP 2 - REPLACE

New enclosure, protection across the board.

Supply is isolated, the old panel is removed safely, and the new weatherproof enclosure is fitted out with a main switch, correctly rated circuit breakers and RCD protection on every active circuit.

Electrician testing RCD trip time on a completed switchboard

STEP 3 - CERTIFY

Tested, labelled and documented.

Insulation resistance, earth continuity and RCD trip times are all measured and recorded. The circuits are labelled, the power goes back on, and your Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to do a switchboard upgrade?
The price depends entirely on what is behind the cover, so we quote after inspecting rather than over the phone. The main drivers are the number of circuits, whether the backing panel contains asbestos, whether the mains cable and meter position have to change, and single phase versus three phase. You get one fixed written figure before anything starts, and the inspection carries no call out fee.
What are the legal requirements for switchboard upgrades in Queensland?
Switchboard work in Queensland must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor and wired to AS/NZS 3000. Any new or altered circuit requires RCD protection, and the finished work has to be tested and certified, with a Certificate of Electrical Safety lodged as the Electrical Safety Office requires. Where the meter or mains are involved, Energex must authorise the disconnection and reconnection.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?
Not always, and we will tell you when you do not. A board already running modern circuit breakers and RCDs may only need extra ways added. You do need an upgrade if ceramic wire fuses are still in place, if there is no safety switch protection, if the enclosure is completely full, or if a big new load such as ducted air conditioning leaves nothing spare.
How to know if a switchboard needs upgrading?
Three symptoms come up constantly. Lights that flicker or dim when a large appliance starts, a buzzing or humming noise from the enclosure, and breakers that trip under load on hot days. Then look at the board itself for rewirable fuse wire, a wooden or asbestos backing panel, scorch marks, or no room left to land another circuit.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take and will my power be off?
Yes, power is off during the changeover, and a standard single phase residential board usually takes four to six hours. Three phase boards, meter relocations and mains upgrades run longer. We confirm the start time in advance so you can plan the day around it, and a fridge or freezer will hold comfortably across that window provided the doors stay shut.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for solar or an EV charger?
Often yes. Solar needs a dedicated inverter circuit with its own isolation, and a home EV charger typically draws 32 amps continuously, which many older boards cannot host at all. If the enclosure is full, or the mains cable is undersized for the extra load, the board has to come first. We check available supply capacity as part of the quote.
What is a three-phase switchboard upgrade and do I need one?
Three phase brings three active conductors into the property instead of one, roughly tripling the supply available. Most Brisbane houses never need it. It becomes worth costing where there is large ducted air conditioning, a workshop, a pool and spa together, or fast EV charging. We work out your real peak load first, because rebalancing circuits on the existing single phase supply is frequently enough.
Does my old switchboard have an asbestos backing panel?
If the home was built or rewired before 1990 there is a real chance it does. Asbestos cement sheet was standard switchboard backing across Brisbane for decades. It is safe while undisturbed, which is precisely why it must never be drilled, cut or sanded during an upgrade. We identify it at the inspection and price the safe removal into the quote instead of surprising you on the day.
