Test and Tag, RCD Testing, and What the Standard Actually Asks For
AS/NZS 3760 sets the intervals. The duty sits with the business.
Test and tag means two things done together. First a visual inspection for damaged leads, cracked plugs, missing pins and heat marks. Then an electrical test covering earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity. The item is tagged with the date it was tested, the date it is next due and who did the work. Retest intervals under AS/NZS 3760 depend on the environment, which is why a hire item or a construction site tool is tested far more often than an office monitor. RCDs sit outside all of that. An appliance tester says nothing about whether the safety switch protecting that circuit will actually trip in time to save someone. We test both, record both, and hand back a register showing what was tested, when, and what falls due next.

The switchboard comes open, circuits are identified and labelled, and fittings, outlets, leads and enclosures are checked for damage, heat and work that never met the standard.
STEP 2 - TEST
Calibrated instruments, recorded numbers.
Earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity are measured. Every RCD gets a timed trip test. Portable appliances are tested and tagged to AS/NZS 3760 where that forms part of the job.

- How much is an electrical safety inspection?
- The price depends on which of the three jobs you need. A pre purchase inspection on a three bedroom house, a landlord compliance check between tenants, and a full workplace test and tag run are all quoted differently, and appliance testing is usually priced per item with a minimum attendance. Tell us the property size and the reason for the report and you get a firm figure on the phone. There is no call out fee.
- How often is RCD testing required in QLD?
- In Queensland workplaces, safety switches must be tested regularly by a competent person: a push button test around every six months for fixed RCDs and roughly every three months for portable ones, plus a timed operating test at longer intervals set by the environment. Higher risk sites such as construction test more often. At home there is no legal schedule, and the Electrical Safety Office advice is to press the test button every three months.
- How much does a certificate of electrical safety cost?
- A Certificate of Testing and Compliance is not a separate purchase. It forms part of the electrical work itself, and a licensed contractor must issue one for prescribed work, so we do not charge extra to produce it. What you are actually paying for is the testing and any rectification that comes out of it. If you need a certificate for work somebody else carried out, no contractor can issue that retrospectively.
- How can I obtain a certificate of electrical safety in Queensland?
- You get one from the licensed electrical contractor who performed the work. In Queensland that contractor is required to test the installation, issue a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for prescribed work, and give you a copy. It cannot be obtained after the fact for work done by someone else, or for work done by an unlicensed person. If yours has gone missing, ask the contractor who did the job for a duplicate.
- What happens in an electrical safety inspection?
- We open the switchboard, identify and label the circuits, then check protective devices, earthing and bonding. Every safety switch gets a timed trip test. Wiring, outlets, light fittings, outdoor points and smoke alarms are inspected for damage, heat and non compliant work. Findings are photographed and ranked by risk. A standard house takes around ninety minutes and the written report follows afterwards.
- How long is an electrical safety certificate valid for?
- A Certificate of Testing and Compliance does not expire. It certifies that a specific piece of electrical work was tested and compliant on the day it was completed, and nothing beyond that. Condition reports are different. Buyers, insurers and property managers generally treat an inspection report as current for around twelve months, and workplace test and tag results carry their own retest date printed on the tag.
- Do landlords need an electrical safety certificate in QLD?
- Queensland does not mandate a routine electrical safety certificate for every rental the way some other states do, but the duty to keep the installation electrically safe still sits with the owner and the manager. Smoke alarm obligations are legislated separately and are strict. A dated inspection report with recorded test results is the practical way to show that duty was met if a tenant is ever injured.
