A single storey house with clear access is quicker than a two storey with a tiled roof and no crawl space. We price per alarm and give you a total for the property before any work starts.

- Count one alarm for every bedroom, one in each hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the house, and one on any storey that has no bedroom on it. A two bedroom single storey home usually lands on three alarms. A three bedroom home usually needs four. Sleep outs, split levels and unusual hallways change the number, so we confirm it on site.

- Queensland requires photoelectric smoke alarms complying with AS 3786, interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound. - Either is allowed, as long as the battery is the right type. A compliant alarm is hardwired to 240V with a backup battery, or powered by a sealed lithium battery rated for 10 years that cannot be removed. Replaceable nine volt batteries do not meet the standard. In homes that already have hardwired alarms we normally stay hardwired, since the cabling is already in place.

- Hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician, because connecting to the 240V supply is electrical work under Queensland law. Battery powered alarms can legally be fitted by an owner, but position, wall clearance and interconnection pairing are where most do it yourself installs come unstuck.
