Downlight Installation in Brisbane, Plus Lighting of Every Kind
Halogen to LED changeovers, fresh downlight layouts, pendants and outdoor lighting. Wired by licensed electricians and quoted as a finished job instead of an hourly rate that keeps ticking.
Old non IC rated halogens run hot in the roof space and need clearance from insulation. Changing them for IC-4 rated LEDs takes that heat source out of the ceiling.
Current Brisbane Offers

What Brisbane Customers Say
Ashgrove
Twenty two halogens gone in a day and the quote covered the lot, including two dimmers that had to be swapped. The lounge is brighter on half the power.

Coorparoo
Kitchen lights flickered every time the dimmer went low. Turned out to be the dimmer rather than the fittings. Changed and tested it with me watching.

Mansfield
New downlight layout through the extension, then sensor lights on the carport while they were already here. The cut-outs are dead straight.

Toowong
Pendants above the island and strip lighting under the overheads. Talked me out of the cooler colour temperature for the lounge and he was right.

A House Full of Halogens Is a House Full of Heat
Roughly 50 Watts Down to About 9, With a Safer Roof Space
A halogen downlight pulls around 50 watts and pushes most of that into the ceiling cavity as heat. An LED doing the same job in the same room sits near 9 watts. Multiply the difference by twenty fittings and it shows up on the bill, and in how hard the air conditioner has to work through a humid Brisbane afternoon.
The safety side matters more than the savings. Older non IC rated halogens needed a clearance zone around and above them, and a great many roof spaces have had batts pushed back over the top of them since. IC-4 rated LED fittings are built to be abutted and covered by insulation, so the clearance problem leaves with the globe.

The Whole Changeover, One Price
Twenty two lights quoted as twenty two lights, dimmers and disposal included, so the invoice matches the number you were told on the phone.
IC-4 Rated Where It Counts
IC-4 fittings can sit hard against ceiling insulation. Old halogens needed a clearance gap that plenty of insulation installers quietly covered over.
Dimmers Matched to Drivers
Most LED flicker is a dimmer problem rather than a globe problem. We pair dimmable fittings with a compatible trailing edge dimmer and test the full range.
Colour Temperature Room by Room
3000K warm white for bedrooms and lounges, 4000K neutral for kitchens, laundries and garages. Tri-colour switchable fittings when the household cannot agree.
Cut-Outs Kept Neat
An existing 90mm hole takes a 90mm fitting. Where a smaller light goes into a larger opening we use the correct trim, not a smear of filler and hope.
Everything Past the Ceiling
Pendants over a benchtop, sensor floodlights on a carport, strip lighting under cabinetry, path lights down the side access. Same crew, same guarantee.

A Brisbane Electrician Who Actually Turns Up

Downlights First, Then the Rest of the List
One Crew for the Ceiling, the Garden and the Driveway
The downlight changeover is usually what triggers the call, and the rest of the list comes out once we are on site. Pendants over the island bench. A lounge dimmer that never worked properly. Sensor floodlights on the carport, strip lighting under the overhead cupboards, path lights along the side access, and a decent light in the roof space so the next tradesman can actually see. It is all fixed wiring, it is all quoted before we start, and it all carries the same workmanship guarantee.

Most Downlight Jobs Are a Single Visit
One room of downlights takes a few hours. A whole home changeover generally takes a day, and we arrive with the fittings, the drivers, the trailing edge dimmers and a vacuum for the ceiling dust. Nothing is left half finished and there is no second trip to chase a part that should have been on the van. If a light has stopped working rather than needing an upgrade, we diagnose it the same visit and tell you straight whether it is the fitting, the driver or the circuit.

Other Brisbane Services We Offer

Cheap Fittings Fail in the Dark
High Colour Rendering, Even Spacing, Dimmers That Match
Bad downlight jobs fail in predictable ways. Colours look flat because the fitting renders them poorly. One end of the room is brighter than the other because the spacing was eyeballed from a ladder. Lights buzz at half brightness because nobody matched the dimmer to the driver. Then a year on, two or three fittings die early while the rest carry on. We supply fittings with a real warranty, set them to a measured grid, and pair the dimmer so the lowest setting still holds steady.

Count them, quote them, change them.
No hourly rate ticking over while somebody works out where your switchboard lives. You get a number for the whole job, and the job is finished on the day we start it.

STEP 1 - Count
Every fitting measured and priced.
We check how many downlights there are, whether the cut-outs are 70mm or 90mm, what dimmers are on the wall, and whether insulation has been pushed over the old fittings. That is the quote.

STEP 2 - Change
Halogens out, IC-4 rated LEDs in.
The circuit is isolated, the old fittings and transformers come out of the roof space, and the LED fittings go in with the correct trim for the opening. Dimmers are swapped where the existing one cannot run an LED load.

STEP 3 - Dim
Tested at full output and at its lowest.
Every light is run up and down the dimmer range so flicker, buzz or uneven output turns up while we are still there. Then the old fittings leave with us rather than sitting in your bin.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does it cost to have a downlight installed?
- Downlight pricing has two parts: a rate per light and the setup for the job overall. Dropping a new fitting into an existing hole is the cheapest version. A light in a fresh cut-out with cable run to it costs more. A whole home changeover of fifteen to thirty lights is priced as a single job rather than a stack of individual ones, and we give you that total before starting.
- How much does an electrician charge to fit downlights?
- Most electricians quote either per downlight or by the hour, which makes a whole house almost impossible to compare. We price the changeover as a package: fittings, labour, any dimmer that has to change to suit an LED load, and disposal of the old halogens and transformers. Count your lights, tell us whether the openings are 70mm or 90mm, and the figure comes back fixed.
- Do I need an electrician to install downlights?
- Yes. Fixed wiring work in Queensland has to be carried out by a licensed electrician, and downlights are fixed wiring. The legal point aside, the work happens in a roof space full of insulation, old transformers and sometimes original cabling. That is exactly where clearances, cable ratings and IC ratings matter, and where a do it yourself attempt tends to go wrong.
- Why are my LED downlights flickering?
- Flickering LEDs are usually a dimmer mismatch. Older leading edge dimmers were built for the heavy load of a halogen and cannot run the tiny load of an LED driver smoothly, which shows up as flicker, a buzz, or a light that refuses to dim below half. A trailing edge dimmer matched to the fitting fixes most cases. Loose terminations and cheap drivers cause the rest.
- Can I replace halogen downlights with LED?
- Yes, and it is the most common lighting job we do in Brisbane. In many homes the new fitting drops straight into the existing cut-out, although 70mm and 90mm openings do not always match what is on the shelf. The old transformer comes out with the halogen. Because the LED fitting is IC-4 rated, insulation can then sit against it rather than being held clear.
- How many downlights do I need per room?
- A common starting point is one downlight for every two to three square metres of floor for general lighting, spaced evenly and kept roughly a metre off the walls. A standard three by four metre bedroom often lands on four lights. A kitchen the same size needs more, because benchtops need task light. Ceiling height and beam angle shift it, so we set the grid out on site.
- Should I choose 3000K or 4000K downlights?
- Pick 3000K warm white for bedrooms, lounges and hallways, and 4000K neutral white for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and garages where light should read clean rather than cosy. Mixing the two within one open plan sightline looks wrong, so choose a single temperature per area. Tri-colour switchable fittings let us set it at installation if the household is split on it.
